Armani Acqua di Gio Profondo: Memories of a Mediterranean Lagoon
When most people go to Italy, they want to hit up the canals and the beaches, and experience the food. As for myself, I like to find a more secluded space amount the rocky coves. The aroma of Mediterranean air clings to my hair, as the sun casts its warming rays upon my sin, making the salt glisten with glee.
Sun-baked rocks that were given respite by shade cast their shadows upon dark blue waters. The wind gently caresses the fresh herbs behind me. I wish I could build a house here and experience it every single day, but would that make it lose its splendor? I am not sure, but I think I will go take a dip in the energizing water and let it wash my worries away once more.
Acqua di Gio has a lineup of very successful releases. From the original being the best-selling men’s fragrance to Profumo being a staple in many fragheads wardrobes, the collection even has lovers that extend beyond our small world of fragrant obsession. However, the best of these, in my opinion, is Profondo, I will just give you another spoiler, I am surely addicted to this one.
Profondo opens up with a blast of oceanic air kissed by salt, which is freshened by the joyfulness of bergamot and a slight sweet juiciness from mandarin. The journey continues as the ocean breeze catches the scent of freshly picked rosemary and coastal cypress to create and aromatic and green heart, which only cements this as a truly Mediterranean-inspired offering. After your dip into refreshing water, a mineral aroma arrives that allows you to imagine the waves gently beating against warmed rocks, with a light shower gel feeling from fresh ambroxan.
I know that most people will say that Profumo is better, but it never entirely worked for me. The incense with the fresh aquatic notes never tickled my fancy. I still love the original Acqua di Gio, but with 30 years on the market, it is no longer a go-to for me. I will still pick up a bottle one day, but I don’t need to because I have Profondo and it feels more modern, but it’s also colder and not as bright.
The Italian release housed in a dark blue bottle is fresh and vibrant, cool and salty, and it lasts all day. This is top-notch work from Alberto Morillas and a far cry from the disjointed Acqua Essenziale Blu that I reviewed earlier this week. This is the style of scent that he is known for and you can tell that his passion shines through in the fragrance.
The bottle is absolutely beautiful and is aptly fitting for the scent held within. A dark blue bottle that represents the cold oceanic plunge of the perfume. I only have a 40ml bottle, but I will be getting a backup quite soon, as I have already used around 15ml of it. It’s not super cheap, but I will wear this in place of Bleu de Chanel every time. It just suits my style, personality, and taste perfectly, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it.
It’s not typical for me to wear a scent for multiple days in a row for personal pleasure. I typically only do that when I am testing for a review. I wore Acqua di Gio Profondo for a week straight and enjoyed every second of it, and I even wore it to bed. I still smile each time I spray this one on because I know it’s going to be a good day, and the fragrance just gives me the feel-good vibes.
