Zoologist: The Editor in Chief’s Favourite Releases From This Toronto-Based Brand

Zoologist is one of my favourite niche perfume houses. Located in Toronto, Victor Wong and his freelance perfume team concoct the perfect mixture of easy to enjoy, highly wearable fragrances and mind-boggling, slightly more challenging to-wear scents.

With an exciting 2022 ahead, Wong has announced the release of two new fragrances, with some secret scents on the way. Today we look at my five personal favourite releases from Zoologist and why these stood out among a 25 fragrance catalogue.

Musk Deer

Musk Deer has accompanied me on many days and nights where comfort and overall pleasure were priorities. The fragrance is spicy, musky, and has a heap of woody sweetness. Quite the perfect men’s scent!

The fragrance consists of Cardamom, Calamus Oil, and Rose on the top. Sambac Jasmine Absolute, Patchouli, Cedarwood Atlas, and Labdanum Absolute in the heart. Finally, Ambrette Absolute, Orris Absolute, Laos Oud, and Australian Sandalwood round out this near-perfect scent.

My favourite facet of this scent is its woods. The Cedarwood, Patchouli, and Sandalwood link up to produce a combination of sweet, effervescent sweetness suppressed by the Oud.

Pia Long did an outstanding job on this hazelnut Nutella bomb of a release. Chipmunk is a warm scent that is worn best during the winter months. It has loads of spice with the perfect combination of chocolate sweetness and deep woods.

Chipmunk begins its breakdown with Quince, Pink Pepper, Red Mandarin, Cardamom, and Nutmeg. The heart includes Camomile, Hazelnut, Fir Balsam, Oak Absolute, and Earthy Notes. You may find Cedarwood, Amyris, Patchouli, Vetiver, Benzoin, Opoponax, Guiacwood, and Animal Notes in the base.

This fragrance reminds me of a warm cup of cocoa by the fire on Christmas eve. It’s dark yet warm like my mother’s hug. It features facets of Camomile, Hazelnut, Cardamom, and Nutmeg most prominently. For those spice lovers, this is one of those scents that you simply just need to own.

Dodo (2020)

At twenty years old, most still see me as a young gun. Because of this, I felt pushed away from more mature fragrances. So when I first smelled Zoologist Dodo, I liked the scent, although I couldn’t see myself wearing it.

Transport to now and Fougere’s have become some of my favourite fragrances, especially to wear. Dodo has quickly become one of my favourites in this category due to its versatility.

You can find Bergamot, Petitgrain, Pink Pepper, and Rosemary on the top. In the heart is Cardamom, Pineapple, which surprisingly shines through quite a bit, Clary Sage, and Black Current Absolute. Finally, Basil, Lavender, Geranium, Cumin, Patchouli, Oakwood, Lavandin, Oakmoss Absolute, Tonka, and Musk complete the base.

This modern twist on a Fougere features a prominent Pineapple note that offsets the Basil, Lavender, and Pink Pepper nicely. I’m inclined to wear this scent when I’m feeling suave and dressed accordingly. Wearing this fragrance to the barbershop is also quite fun as it often makes my hairdresser rethink the aftershave he uses!

This award-winning fragrance begins with Orange, Ginger Syrup, and a Royal Jelly Accord. In the heart is where you find supporting notes of Broom, Heliotrope, Mimosa, and Orange Flower. Then, Benzoin, Labdanum, Musks, Sandalwood, Tonka, and Vanilla conclude this showstopping fragrance.

Bee opens with a syrupy, orange juice accord which has been boiled down and had its vapours captured and bottled. Then, it transitions to some other decadent notes like Vanilla and Tonka.

Finally, the fragrance brings Musk and Sandalwood to the forefront to battle the newly acquired Ginger accord. What you are left with is a fantastic scent full of gourmand sweetness and endless wearability options.

Zoologist Panda

Panda (2017)

This final fragrance strikes deep into my heart with its inherent boba milk tea accord. Panda has top notes of Apple, Magnolia, Mandarin, Lily, Osmanthus, Ozone, and Tea. Amber, Bamboo, Earthy Notes, Jasmine, Orris, and Patchouli are in the heart. The base concludes with Civet, Musk, Sandalwood, and Vanilla.

Panda has a very calming, soothing overall scent profile which is backed hardest by Apple, Jasmine, Lily, and Tea. It reminds me of just falling back into the stomach of a giant, pudgy panda and letting it consume me with its cozy fur and massive paws.

I love this fragrance on days when I need that extra little kick of energy or just need to feel good. No seduction or ridiculous scent profiles. Just a delightful, simple fragrance for those days when you need a good smile.
