Hidden Gems vol. 8: Givenchy Gentleman Eau de Parfum
As a continuation to our Hidden Gems series, I would like to write about one of the fragrances that is more than worthy of being called a hidden gem, Givenchy Gentleman the Eau de Parfum edition. Gentleman is one of Givenchy’s oldest and most cherished lines. The line was so groundbreaking that Givenchy released more flankers than I can remember. In 2018, Olivier Crisp and Nathalie Lorson gave birth to this marvelous flanker.
Treading a different path from most of its predecessors, Gentleman Eau de Parfum was not on the fresh side of the spectrum, but a rather darker, more serious and mysterious one. I remember buying it back in 2018 after smelling it just once on a colleague of mine. The perfume comes in a pitch-black colored bottle with a transparent bottom. The deep dark coloring of the body makes it impossible to recognize the level of juice inside, therefore, you would better always have a backup bottle on you.
Givenchy Gentleman EDP is a warm and spicy oriental scent with some ambry and powdery vibes. It is best worn in autumn or winter, preferably at night. Some frag heads compare the fragrance to Dior’s renowned Homme Intense, but to my nose they are totally different. Gentleman EDP is not as sweet as Dior Homme Intense, yet it is gloomier. The only perfume that I find resembling Gentleman EDP is Yves Saint Laurent’s Velours from the Le Vestiaire de Parfums luxury collection.
The fragrance starts off with aromatic lavender and spicy black pepper. The lavender and pepper combo bespeaks both masculinity and elegance. The heart utilizes the captivating orris note which takes the fragrance somewhere deep along with the divergent tolu Balsam. The dry down is pretty oriental and woody with the bright vanilla and the earthy patchouli. I get some whiskey and some leathery vibes from the perfume. Both are not mentioned in the official note listing. It is oriental but not heavy or absolute oriental.
The fragrance performs very decently. The longevity is superb and the sillage is exceptionally good. You can expect to stand out among any crowd within up to 5 hours. This release suits adults more than youth, and hence the name! Givenchy Gentleman Eau de Parfum is an original and timeless beauty, and in terms of pricing, like all our Hidden Gems, retails for a very low price tag considering its value.
