Guerlain Heritage Eau de Toilette: A Review on an Old School Scent.

The house of Guerlain has been present in the fragrance industry for many years, garnering talent from the actual Guerlain family, as well as from external master perfumers. They have amassed a colossal fragrance portfolio, ranging from the most modern to the most classic.
Heritage sits somewhere in between, straddling the line between contemporary scent design and classical sensibilities. A blend of new and old, bright and dark.

A plethora of notes and accords are credited in different outlets, but some of them definitely assume a bigger role in each stage. The opening is dominated by a mix of bergamot and lemon, laced with nuanced lavender. As we delve towards the heart, coriander and peppers become more evident, with a carnation touch softened by a discreet orris. A patchouli note becomes more prominent as time passes, connecting the heart to the base. Once the base fully kicks in, it becomes woodier and permeated with a dash of warm amber. An oakmoss push is also present, never overwhelming.

The wearing experience is bright and uplifting at first, with citrus, aromatics and light aldehydes starting off a sparkling first encounter. Shortly it feels progressively spicier, fuller, a rendition of different notes, expertly interwoven into a magical affair. The dry down becomes the complete realisation of the previously laid out experience! Spearheaded by a cleaner kind of patchouli, the woods and amber dance ever so slowly; They unfold under the gaze of a gentlemanly oakmoss. In the midst of it all, a fleeting hint of cacao can be occasionally felt!

Performance is good, lasting through most of a work day, with a sillage that’s more on the personal space level, but works perfectly for the kind of scent that it is. I find it is pretty versatile, perfectly fitting a laid-back dinner as much as a formal day at the office.

It certainly flows into the classical gentleman type, but ladies don’t be immediately dismayed. Always give any and every scent a try! You never know what poetry may rise up when you step out of your comfort zone! The same being completely valid for men. Moreover, it works all year round, maybe excluding extreme heat situations, but on a milder Summer night, it works its magic flawlessly!

Heritage Eau de Toilette has recently migrated to the L’Homme Ideal type of bottle, after years of sharing its physical likeness with Habit Rouge, L’Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme, Vetiver, etc. It has seen its fair share of different bottle styles over the years, but let’s hope the latest transformation is just a change of container without a change of content.

The culmination of this entrancing journey is a scent that’s both brightly modern and deeply classical, the perennial gentleman, with a welcoming attitude and mannerisms, rooted over a mysterious and introverted guise. In my opinion, Heritage is an amazing example of fragrance artistry which definitely should be experienced by everyone. It is another gem on Guerlain’s heavily studded crown!
