Habit Rouge Eau de Toilette Intense L’Instinct: Guerlain Recreates a Fragrance That Deserves to Be in a Museum

In 1965, Parisian beauty house Guerlain released Habit Rouge, a tantalizing fragrance that redefined men’s perfumery and the male beauty industry as a whole. Its name pays homage to the jackets worn by equestrian riders during this period. They were seen as men who were masters of art, able to tame the brute strength that lives inside of a stallion.

Now, the house has unleashed the power of Habit Rouge Eau de Toilette Intense L’Instinct, a flanker to the original fragrance from 1965. These two worlds collide, separated by generations of fragrance trends and technological advancements. In this contemporary scent, Guerlain aims to reinvent Habit Rouge with the spirit of power and freedom.

The house has utilized design cues from the original design, even copying some aspects down to the hue. Its similarities begin at the top, where a blood-red cap sits atop an atomizer, speckled with texture on the lower half and smooth on the top. Then, the bottle is shaped like a square, with the same badge in the center of the glass. Protruding through the transparent sides is a light gold juice, maintaining similar colour prompts compared to the original.

Guerlain Habit Rouge Eau de Toilette Intense L’Instinct features an assumed note breakdown of zesty Bergamot at the top amidst a refreshing Grapefruit and apocalyptic Absinthe accord. Down in the heart is Rose, which is a delicate new touch to the olfactive concoction and a tribute to how far modern perfumery has come since 1965. This portion of the breakdown concludes with Hemp, a note known for its psychoactive marijuana aromas.

The base is where this fragrance becomes an ode to its father. Leather and Vanilla were staple accords in the original release, becoming trailblazing notes for their time. The duo syncs with Patchouli, an accord that still finds abundant success in today’s modern perfume style.

Guerlain Habit Rouge was initially concentrated as an Eau de Toilette, kicking off its life on your skin with the rather zingy pair of Green Lemon and Bitter Orange. It then transcends into the lone note of Patchouli in the heart. The fragrance concludes with Leather, Vanilla, and Benzoin in the base.

Guerlain attempted to revive the historic scent in 2003 with an Eau de Parfum flanker. It took the original olfactive profile of the original, turning up key aspects and recreating them with modern notes. This bid to recreate greatness begins with Bergamot, Lemon, and Orange at the top. It then moves to Neroli and Jasmine in the base, with Leather, Oud, Vanilla, and Patchouli coming together to complete the scent.

Guerlain Habit Rouge Eau de Toilette Intense L’Instinct will be available in two different sizes. This pursuit for modern glory is available in 50ml and 100ml bottle sizes, each equipped with an atomizer. For 50ml, Guerlain is looking for $80 USD, and the 100ml should cost $109 USD.
