Kilian Love, Don’t Be Shy Review: A Romantic Rose for Valentine’s Day

It’s as if the universe aligned for this review. Rihanna said that this was her fragrance a while back, and she just headlined the Super Bowl halftime show. Valentine’s Day is two days away and roses are synonymous with the holiday. It just seems like a perfect time to review Kilian’s most popular release, Love, Don’t Be Shy (or LDBS as it is commonly called), even though Angels’ Share might be more beloved now.

Love, don’t be shy opens with a bright neroli, which admittedly feels a bit jarring to the rest of the composition, but it soon melds into the silky perfume with effortless glee. A citrusy dose of sweetened orange blossom lends its cleanliness to the scent, while the noble rose, sweet and luscious, beguiles the senses. Jasmine flowers bloom in the heart to impart the moon’s embrace. A sweet base of marshmallow melts into creamy vanilla and warm labdanum to create an unforgettably seductive trail.

A bed of romantic roses with silky white sheets. The allure of vanilla entices the senses. The sparkling red dress flows around her silhouette. The lights are dim, but my senses are alive. She has entranced me, fully and without effort. Unwrapping the mystery of her intoxication is now my goal.

Kilian’s Love, is just that, a love. I won’t be shy about it, I didn’t want to like this. It was hyped and I turned my nose up at it so many times until I tried it. I expected a generic sticky gourmand, but what I got was a buttery smooth scent full of unexpected surprised. The way the white florals play with the rose and vanilla is simply breathtaking. The way that everything rests on that creamy vanilla base and gives little nuances to each accord just reminds me of what the Kilian brand is, sexy and suave, with seductive scents that make you confident.

Love, Don’t Be Shy lasts all day long. It is a powerful scent that leaves a sillage trail that people will notice, but it’s not overbearing and cloying. It simply is what it is. While the freshness wanes in the later stages, the vanilla base will have you smelling amazing into the night. This is not a work scent to me, this is a wintertime date night scent. It’s thick and can cut through the cold. This is the type of scent that I would love to smell on a woman instead of those forceful sticky gourmands. I am only one man with an opinion, and it’s well known that men love vanilla.

People have said that Kilian’s motto “Perfume as an Art” doesn’t fit because the fragrances aren’t artistic. I think they are missing the point. There is an art to seduction that Kilian has mastered, and his perfumes speak to that. That is why his perfume is art, in my eyes.

Sorry to disappoint, but I am not speaking about reformulations. I enjoy scents as they are and this is beautiful. But for reference’s sake, my LDBS is almost as dark as wine. The perfumer, Calice Becker, has stated that this scent has no been reformulated and that is good enough for me. She certainly knows much more about the scent than I do. I am only a fan.

In a world that often feels cold, Love, don’t be shy is a breath of fresh air. A trip into the cozy embrace of love. A hug from someone you care about. It is simply that addictive personally that you cannot get enough of, and frankly, I don’t want to ever tire of it.
